Since 1909, the SHL Schweizerische Hotelfachschule Luzern has been known for training hotel managers and executives of tomorrow in a practical and application-oriented manner. Thanks to varied semesters at the SHL as well as in-depth internships in the professional world, the career-accompanying German course of study «Dipl. Hotelier(e)-Gastronom(in) HF» leads to comprehensive competencies that are indispensable for managing a company.
The career-accompanying German course of study «Dipl. Hotelier(e)-Gastronom(in) HF» at SHL is based on the long-standing experience that future managers should have experienced all the areas of a hotel business. This philosophy is clearly reflected in the structure and content of the four school semesters and the three practical internships.
With a reasonable amount of effort, the SHL diploma can be supplemented with the «Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a Major in Hospitality Management» at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The semester fees are charged in stages - i.e. per semester. Since students gain work experience between semesters, they also earn money during this time and can (co-)finance their studies.
The semester rates include all digital teaching materials, examination fees, excursions, the kitchen and service uniforms, a knife set and meals from Monday morning to Friday noon (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Semesters 2 and 4 are paid internship semesters, for which the minimum gross internship wage in Switzerland is CHF 2'216 per month (according to L-GAV | as of January 2022). The management experience following semester 5 is also a paid practical internship in the hotel or gastronomy industry.
Swiss students (incl. the Principality of Liechtenstein) and students with a B or C residence permit are subsidised by their canton of residence with CHF 20'000. The «Intercantonal Agreement on Contributions to Courses of Study at Colleges of Higher Education» (Interkantonale Vereinbarung über Beiträge an die Bildungsgänge der höheren Fachschulen, HFSV) specifically regulates the amount of contributions that a canton pays for its students to attend school outside the canton. The application submitted by SHL to the canton liable for payment will definitively decide on the awarding of the subsidies. Students from abroad who have their place of residence in Switzerland before the start of their studies are also able to submit an application.
